Our camp's Philosophy for Grown-ups
What is Our Camp?
Inspired by my time at Camp Sea Gull, Our Camp is an educational Youtube program aimed for preschoolers.
Our Mission
Through intentional programming, to provide-
- Quality role models who are the same person on and off the screen.
- A safe environment where all are welcome.
- Opportunities to learn important life lessons if you so choose.
Our Camp Core Values
Posted on the wall in every episode, Our Camp's core values are:
Respect- Treat others the way you want to be treated.
Honesty- Tell the truth, always.
Integrity- Do the right thing, even when you think no one is looking.
Reflection- Take the time to process your thoughts, actions, and experiences.
Our core values help guide the decisions we make and keep us centered.
Why start Our Camp?
Our Camp was started to bring the camp spirit out to the world.
How do we intend to accomplish our Mission?
Intentional Programming
We try our best to be intentional and detail oriented about every decision we make here at Our Camp.
The Adventure Door Program- features real people and takes place in the real world. This program focuses on developing life skills through role modeling and reflection.
We want to make a distinction between real life and pretend, so real people will not share the screen with any Nation of Imagination puppets. (unless the puppets are depicted in a drawing or photo)
The Knight Who Lost His Sword Program- serves as one big metaphor. Sir Bob's Story starts when he loses his sword while trying to move a dragon. Sir Bob's sword is a metaphor for his impulse, something all children struggle to control growing up. When Sir Bob loses his sword, he also loses his ability to use impulse to solve his problems. As a result, Sir Bob has to rely on his new shovel (the metaphor for his critical thinking skills) and his friends to solve his problems.
Each character was intentionally created to help Sir Bob on his journey and be three dimensional.
Episode Structure
Children thrive on routines, which is why each episode follows the same three-part structure.
Introduction/Welcome- Every episode starts with a greeting from Chase to the camper. Then he will either introduce the topic or recap last week's episode to build recollection skills and then introduce the new story.
The Adventure- If watching The Adventure Door series, camper will follow Chase on an adventure! If watching The Knight Who Lost His Sword, campers will travel to the Nation of Imagination and follow Sir Bob and his friends on an adventure!
Reflection- Every episode ends with a reflection on the adventure we just participated in. Here at Our Camp, we want to prioritize taking a moment to slow down and process our actions and feelings in a busy and noisy world.
